There were a few cable spools left over at work, and I wanted one.
Not because I needed a cable spool.
I needed a workbench.
The Dusty Talon has existed for a while now in corners. A little space for spinning. A place to photograph yarn. Tools tucked here, supplies stacked there, and projects migrating from one available surface to another.
It worked.
But there is a difference between finding somewhere to work and having a place for the work.
Today, that changed.
The spool was big, awkward, heavy and required getting a stack of wood, plus two enormous rounds of wood up two flights of stairs – which is apparently the sort of thing I now consider a reasonable project.
Once it was home and put back together though, it became exactly what I’d imagined: a proper workbench.
It isn’t polished furniture. It wasn’t bought to match anything. The marks, holes and evidence of its first life are still there. I don’t want to erase those things. They’re part of the reason I wanted it in the first place.
This is where things can be taken apart, put together, experimented with, abandoned for a while and figured out. Where fiber can become yarn, scraps can become something useful, and the occasional ridiculous idea cna be given enough room to see whether it works.
It isn’t precious. It isn’t perfect.
It’s sturdy, useful, a little strange and it has already lived one life before arriving here.
Which means, naturally, it belongs at The Dusty Talon.
The Dusty Talon has a workbench now.
A proper one.
And I have a feeling the workbench isn’t quite finished with itself yet.
